We are looking for PhD students with a background in physics, applied math, complex systems, or computer science — and a willingness to read papers from the others. Postdoc positions will open in 2027.
Apply through UR Physics for Fall 2026.
Submit your application to the University of Rochester Physics & Astronomy graduate program. Mention the AID Lab in your statement, and feel free to email Yuanzhao beforehand with a paragraph about what you are interested in.
Positions open in 2027.
We will recruit one or two postdocs per year starting in 2027. If you are likely to be on the market then, register your interest by email — we will send updates when calls go out.
Independent-study and summer research.
Currently enrolled UR undergrads can reach out about independent-study credit. Summer research funding is expected to begin in 2027.
Physics, applied math, computer science, or a related field. We care more about curiosity and a willingness to read across disciplines than about a specific toolkit.
No — we will teach you what you need. Likewise, you do not need a deep dynamics background. You do need to be comfortable being uncomfortable: every project in the lab sits on at least one boundary.
Yes, please do — especially if you want to ask whether your interests align. A short paragraph about what you have been thinking about is more useful than a formal CV.
There will be. For now, UR undergraduates can reach out about independent-study projects; we expect to have summer funding starting 2027.
